Surrounded by mountains and endless Armenian skies, Lake Sevan is one of the most beautiful natural destinations in Armenia.

Located in Gegharkunik Province, approximately an hour from Yerevan, Sevan is Armenia’s largest lake and one of the country’s most popular destinations for nature, history, photography, and summer escapes.

Sitting at an altitude of around 1,900 meters above sea level, Lake Sevan covers approximately 1,240 square kilometers, creating an extraordinary expanse of blue water in the heart of the Armenian Highlands.

A staircase leads from the peninsula up toward the monastery. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across Lake Sevan.

Relax on the Shores of Lake Sevan

During the warmer months, Lake Sevan becomes one of Armenia’s favorite summer destinations.

Beaches and recreation areas can be found around different parts of the shoreline, offering opportunities to relax beside the water, swim, take boat trips, and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Water activities such as boating, windsurfing, and jet skiing are also available seasonally. Armenia’s tourism portal highlights July through September as the main period for summer water activities.

Even if you do not plan to swim, spending a quiet afternoon beside the lake is an experience worth including in your Armenia itinerary.

Discover Noratus Khachkar Cemetery

Travel farther around Lake Sevan and you can discover one of Armenia’s most remarkable collections of khachkars — traditional Armenian cross-stones.

The historic cemetery at Noratus contains more than 1,000 khachkars, decorated with crosses, geometric patterns, plants, and other intricate stone carvings.

Walking between these centuries-old monuments provides a fascinating introduction to an important tradition of Armenian medieval art.

With Lake Sevan and the surrounding mountains nearby, Noratus is an excellent addition to a journey around the lake.

Visit Hayravank Monastery

Another beautiful historic site overlooking Lake Sevan is Hayravank Monastery.

Located on a rocky hill above the water, the monastery dates mainly from the 9th to 12th centuries and offers a quieter atmosphere than the more frequently visited Sevanavank.

Its dark stone architecture, medieval khachkars, and panoramic location make Hayravank particularly attractive for travelers interested in history and photography.

Combining Sevanavank, Hayravank, and Noratus creates an excellent cultural route around Lake Sevan.

Taste the Flavors of Sevan

A trip to Sevan is also an opportunity to experience local Armenian cuisine.

Summer is the most popular season for travelers who want to enjoy beaches and water activities.

The mountain climate means temperatures around Lake Sevan can feel noticeably cooler than in Yerevan, making it a popular escape during Armenia’s hotter months.

Long summer days are ideal for combining Sevanavank, the shoreline, restaurants, and nearby historical attractions in a single trip.

Lake Sevan in Autumn and Winter

Sevan is beautiful far beyond the summer season.

During autumn, golden hills and changing mountain colors create wonderful conditions for landscape photography.
