The Story of Gregory the Illuminator

The history of Khor Virap is closely connected with Saint Gregory the Illuminator, one of the most important figures in Armenian Christianity.

According to Armenian tradition, King Tiridates III imprisoned Gregory here for his Christian faith. Gregory spent approximately 13 years in an underground dungeon before being released. He later played a central role in the conversion of the Armenian royal family and Armenia’s adoption of Christianity in the early 4th century.

The name Khor Virap translates as “deep dungeon”, referring to the underground pit where Gregory was imprisoned.
